What is Snap-8?
Snap-8 (Acetyl Octapeptide-3) is a synthetic peptide of 8 amino acids, developed as a cosmetic alternative to botulinum toxin. The name comes from the SNARE complex — the molecular machinery that Snap-8 modulates.
It was developed by Lipotec (now part of Lubrizol) as an improved version of Argireline (Acetyl Hexapeptide-3). Snap-8 has two additional amino acids, which improves stability and potential effect.
Unlike botulinum toxin, which completely blocks neuromuscular transmission, Snap-8 acts through modulation — it reduces, but does not eliminate, muscle contractions.
How does it work?
Expression wrinkles form from repeated muscle contractions (frowning, squinting). For a muscle to contract, the nerve ending must release a neurotransmitter (acetylcholine) via the SNARE complex.
Snap-8 competes with a component of the SNARE complex (SNAP-25), reducing the effectiveness of neurotransmitter release. The result: muscle contractions become milder, and the formation of expression wrinkles is slowed.
The effect is dose-dependent and reversible — upon discontinuation of application, muscle function is fully restored.
What do the studies show?
An in vitro study by Lipotec demonstrated that Snap-8 at 10% concentration inhibits neurotransmitter release by up to 40% in cell models.
A clinical study with a 30% cream containing Snap-8 showed an average 35% reduction in the depth of wrinkles around the eyes after 28 days of application.
A comparative study confirms that Snap-8 has better stability and higher efficacy than its predecessor Argireline (Acetyl Hexapeptide-3).
