What is GHK-Cu?
GHK-Cu (Glycyl-L-Histidyl-L-Lysine:Copper) is a tripeptide naturally present in human blood plasma, saliva, and urine. It consists of three amino acids (glycine, histidine, lysine) bound to a copper ion (Cu²⁺).
It was discovered in 1973 by Dr. Loren Pickart, who noticed that plasma from 20-year-olds stimulated fibronectin synthesis in cell cultures significantly more strongly than plasma from 60-year-olds. The difference was attributed to GHK-Cu.
Natural GHK-Cu levels in the blood decrease with age — from ~200 ng/mL at 20 years to ~80 ng/mL at 60 years. This decrease correlates with the visible signs of skin aging.
How does it work in the skin?
GHK-Cu stimulates the synthesis of type I and III collagen — the main structural proteins of the skin. Higher collagen levels mean denser, more elastic skin with fewer fine lines.
The peptide activates proteoglycan synthesis (decorin, biglycan), which help with skin hydration and turgor. At the same time, it stimulates the formation of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), including hyaluronic acid.
GHK-Cu has antioxidant properties — it binds free radicals and reduces oxidative stress, a major factor in skin aging.
Research also points to a regulatory role: GHK-Cu modulates the activity of over 4000 genes, many of which are related to inflammation, tissue regeneration, and antioxidant defense.
