What is Epithalon?

Epithalon (Epitalon, Epithalone) is a synthetic tetrapeptide (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly) based on the active fragment of a polypeptide from the epiphysis (pineal gland). It was developed by the Russian gerontologist Prof. Vladimir Khavinson at the Institute of Gerontology in St. Petersburg.

Interest in Epithalon stems from its ability to activate telomerase — the enzyme that lengthens telomeres. Telomeres are the protective 'caps' of chromosomes that shorten with each cell division.

Telomere shortening is one of the markers of biological aging. When telomeres become critically short, the cell enters senescence (an aged state) or apoptosis (programmed cell death).

How does it work?

Epithalon activates the telomerase gene (hTERT) — the reverse transcriptase that adds repeating DNA sequences (TTAGGG) to the ends of chromosomes. This compensates for the loss of telomere length during cell division.

The peptide also stimulates the secretion of melatonin from the epiphysis. Melatonin is a powerful antioxidant and regulator of the circadian rhythm, whose production declines significantly with age.

Studies suggest that Epithalon may influence the gene expression of multiple genes related to cell proliferation and antioxidant defense.

What do studies say?

A study in the Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine (2003) demonstrated that Epithalon activated telomerase in human fetal fibroblasts, increasing telomere length and extending cellular lifespan by up to 10 divisions.

A long-term study by Prof. Khavinson and team (2007) in mice showed increased mean lifespan in the group receiving Epithalon compared to controls.

A clinical observation in elderly patients from the Gerontological Institute in St. Petersburg noted improvement in immune parameters and melatonin levels after a course of Epithalon.
