You hear about peptides everywhere, but what are they really? We explain in simple terms what they do, what they're used for, and which peptide is for what.

Peptides. This word keeps popping up more and more. On social media, at the gym, in articles about health and longevity. Everywhere someone mentions peptides.
But what are they really? Are they hormones? Steroids? Are they dangerous? And why have so many people started using them?
This article is for you if you've heard the word but don't know where to start. We'll explain everything step by step. No complicated words, no medical jargon.
What is a peptide?
Let's start with the basics. Your body is built from proteins. Proteins, in turn, are built from smaller parts called amino acids. Think of amino acids as LEGO bricks.
When you connect a small number of bricks (2 to 50), you get a peptide. When you connect many more (over 50), you get a protein. It's that simple. A peptide is just a short chain of amino acids.
Your body naturally produces hundreds of different peptides every day. They act as "messages" between cells. One peptide tells the brain "I'm full, stop eating." Another tells the muscles "recover faster." A third tells the skin "produce more collagen."
Each of these messages does something specific. And that's where it gets interesting.
What about the peptides that are sold?
Research peptides are synthetic copies of these natural messages. They are manufactured in a lab, but are identical or very close to the ones the body produces on its own.
The idea is simple: if your body produces peptide X, but in your case produces it insufficiently (due to age, lifestyle, genetics), you can help it from the outside.
Peptides are NOT steroids. They are not hormones (although some stimulate hormone production). They are more like "instructions" that tell the body what to do.
What are peptides used for?
Different peptides do different things. Just like different vitamins cover different needs. Here are the nine main categories:
1. Weight loss and appetite control
This is the biggest and fastest-growing category right now. You've probably heard of Ozempic, Wegovy, or Mounjaro. Behind these brand names are peptides.
How do they work? When you eat, the body produces a hormone called GLP-1, which tells the brain "that's enough, I'm full." In many people this signal is weak. Weight-loss peptides copy and amplify this signal, so you eat less, feel full longer, and the body starts to lose weight.
There are currently three main weight-loss peptides, and each works a bit differently:
Semaglutide (Ozempic/Wegovy). Acts through one pathway, amplifying the GLP-1 signal. The most studied and proven. People lose an average of 12-15% of their body weight over about a year and a half. Millions of people worldwide use it, and it has a long track record.
Tirzepatide (Mounjaro/Zepbound). Acts through two pathways instead of one. In addition to GLP-1, it also activates a second hormone (GIP), which additionally helps the body process food. The result is stronger: up to 22% weight loss. In studies, 1 in every 3 participants lost over 25% of their body weight.
Retatrutide. The newest one, acting through three pathways. In addition to GLP-1 and GIP, it adds a third mechanism that directly accelerates fat burning. Early data show up to 24% weight loss. It is still in clinical trials, but the results are impressive.
All three are taken once a week with a pen (like an insulin pen). It's not painful, the needle is very thin.

2. Recovery after injuries
Do you have an injury that won't go away? Pain in the knee, elbow, or shoulder that's been dragging on for weeks? Or do you simply recover slowly after workouts? These two peptides are the most popular for such situations.
BPC-157 (Body Protection Compound). Derived from a protein in your gastric juice. Yes, your body already produces it naturally! When applied as a peptide, it helps recovery right at the site where you inject it. It creates new blood vessels in the damaged area (more blood = more nutrients), accelerates collagen production (the "glue" for tendons and ligaments), and is the most studied peptide for muscle, joint, and tendon injuries, with over 100 published studies.
TB-500 (Thymosin Beta-4). Unlike BPC-157, TB-500 doesn't act at a specific site. It travels through the bloodstream and helps wherever there is damage. It reduces inflammation systemically and accelerates regeneration. Think of it as the difference between a cream for a specific spot and a pill that works from within.
Many people combine them: BPC-157 for local action + TB-500 for systemic action. The two work differently and complement rather than duplicate each other. The usual course is 4-6 weeks.

3. Growth hormone
Growth hormone (GH) is like the body's manager. It's responsible for muscles, sleep, skin, recovery, and metabolism. The problem? After age 25-30, the body produces less and less of it. Every decade, levels drop by about 14%.
Growth hormone peptides don't add an artificial hormone. They tell the body: "Hey, produce more of your own." This is the more natural approach, the body itself decides how much to produce.
In the brain there is a small gland (the pituitary) that produces growth hormone. It receives two signals: "produce" and "release." Different peptides mimic different signals:
Ipamorelin. The safest and most popular GH peptide. Improves sleep, speeds up recovery, and improves the muscle-to-fat ratio. Doesn't raise stress and doesn't disrupt other hormones. The ideal starting point for anyone.
CJC-1295. Works together with Ipamorelin for a much stronger effect. Comes in two versions: without DAC (fast-acting, 2-3 times a day) and with DAC (slow-acting, 1-2 times a week). The Ipamorelin + CJC-1295 combination is the most popular growth hormone peptide stack in the world.
HGH Somatropin. This one is different. It's not a peptide that stimulates the body. It IS growth hormone itself, produced in a lab, but identical to the natural one. Ready-to-use pen with a dosing dial, no preparation needed. The strongest effect, but also the highest price.
IGF-1 LR3. A long-acting insulin-like growth factor (20-30 hours). Popular for muscle growth and post-workout recovery. More powerful and more specialized than Ipamorelin.

4. Skin, collagen, and anti-aging
These peptides focus on what you see from the outside (skin, wrinkles) and what happens on the inside (cellular aging, energy).
GHK-Cu (Skin Glow). A copper peptide, one of the most studied for skin. Stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, the two proteins that make skin firm and elastic. Visible results within 4 weeks: smoother skin, fewer fine lines, improved complexion. Suitable for all skin types and can also be applied topically (on the skin).
Snap-8. A cosmetic alternative to Botox. Reduces expression wrinkles (forehead, around the eyes) by relaxing the facial muscles. Unlike Botox, it's not an invasive procedure. Applied directly to problem areas.
Epitalon. This one is interesting. It has been studied for slowing cellular aging by supporting telomeres. Telomeres are like the plastic tips of shoelaces, they protect DNA during every cell division. A short, intensive protocol: 10 days of use, then a 6-month break.
NAD+. Involved in over 500 processes in the body. Key for cellular energy and longevity mechanisms. With age, NAD+ levels drop dramatically. Improves mental clarity, focus, and energy levels. A major trend in the longevity community.
5. Tanning and pigmentation
Want an even tan without hours in the sun? Two peptides stimulate the body's natural production of melanin (the pigment that colors the skin):
Melanotan II. The most popular tanning peptide, especially in Europe. Stimulates melanin production with minimal sun exposure (15-20 minutes). Additional effects people report: reduced appetite and increased libido. Very popular before the summer season.
Melanotan I. Smoother and more selective than Melanotan II. Fewer side effects, but requires a bit more UV exposure for a visible result. More suitable for people with lighter skin who want a more natural and gradual tan.
6. Focus and memory
Semax. A nootropic peptide developed in Russia and used for decades. Improves focus, memory, and mental clarity. Stimulates the growth of new neural connections in the brain (this is called neuroplasticity). No hormonal action, doesn't affect testosterone or cortisol. Taken as nasal drops (intranasally), which is very convenient. The effect is felt from day 2-3.
7. Sleep and relaxation
DSIP (Delta Sleep Inducing Peptide). A natural peptide for deep, restorative sleep. The body produces it, but levels drop under stress and strain. 9. Hormonal balance
HCG (Choriomon). Stimulates natural testosterone production. European pharmaceutical quality (Choriomon, Switzerland). Suitable for post-cycle therapy and hormonal recovery. Popular among men who want to maintain normal testosterone levels.
How are peptides taken?
This is the question that stops most people. "Do I have to inject myself?!" Let's explain.
Most peptides are administered via subcutaneous injection. It sounds scary, but in practice it's like an insulin injection: a very thin needle, almost painless, and you get used to it after the first time. You inject into the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm, it takes 10 seconds.
The good news is that not all peptides require injection:

How to store peptides?

Are peptides safe?
Short answer: with proper use and from a quality supplier, the risk is low. But let's explain in more detail.
